Tahiti Destination Guide

The very name conjures up a picture of impossibly blue oceans, soft sand beaches, swaying palms and Polynesian beauties in grass skirts. Tahiti is actually the name of just one island out of 118 which make up the region known as French Polynesia. It acts as the gateway to some stunningly beautiful islands of which dreams are made.

The facts:

Geography: French Polynesia comprises 118 islands made up of five island groups that cover an area the size of Europe in the South Pacific. Geographically, they lie some four and a half hours flying time from New Zealand, which is the nearest main landfall.

Language: Tahitian and French

Passports: You will need a full British passport valid for a minimum of six months beyond your date of return.

Visas: Visitors from most European countries may stay for one month without a visa.

Vaccinations: None are required, but it is recommended that you consult your doctor for further information.

Travelling time: Papeete is approximately 20 hours flying time in total. Flights operate via the USA and most visitors break the journey in Los Angeles or New York en route.

Local time: GMT -10 hours
