Addo Elephant National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa and lies deep within the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape. The park was established in 1931 to protect the last 11 surviving elephants of the Eastern Cape. The park has now been expanded to incorporate several other habitat eco-systems, such as forest coastline, mountain and semi-desert. Today the park boasts the ‘Big Seven’, elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale and great white shark and several species of antelope. It also protects the world’s largest Cape gannet breeding population on Bird Island.
