Day 1 Christchurch: Day at leisure. Time to explore this city known as the ‘garden city’ in your own time. Most areas are within walking distance; the botanical gardens, shops, restaurants and cafes, or take a leisurely scenic punt down the Avon River.
Day 2 Christchurch/Mt Cook: Travel south through the flat Canterbury plains before heading inland to Mount Cook National Park. This afternoon you will have time to explore and take an optional glacial explorer cruise or a helicopter flight over the mountain ranges (approx. 4 hours).
Day 3 Mt Cook/Dunedin: This morning take in fabulous views on this spectacular drive to South Island’s second city, Dunedin. Originally founded by Scottish settlers (Dunedin is celtic for Edinburgh) the city is rich in Victorian architecture, with many walks in the area taking in this and Mt Cargill. Alternatively visit Larnach Castle which dates back to 1871 or Glenfalloch Woodland Garden (approx. 4 hours).
Day 4 Dunedin: Day at leisure. A full day to explore the Otago Peninsula and the magnificent wildlife found in this region. Visit Albatross Taiaroa Head, the only northern royal albatross colony in the world so close to human habitation, see Hookers sea lions, little blue penguins and one of the rarest penguin species, the yellow-eyed penguin. The unique yellow-eyed penguins are a conservation project and can be viewed in a system of trenches and hides allowing viewing of the penguins from just a few metres.
Day 5 Dunedin/Queenstown: Travel down the coast to Milton, before heading inland to the adrenalin capital Queenstown where your tour ends and you return your hire car (approx. 3 hours 30 minutes).
